With the release of “Lloyd the Chipmunk and the Quest for the Perfect Job,” I had been bitten by the book-publishing bug. Since I did the writing, illustrating, digital converting and assembly of the book all by myself, I knew exactly how to make any book I wanted to going forward… so I made another!
Upon rediscovering a folder that collected almost 200 sticky notes I had doodled on while working in an office over the past two decades, I shared it with my 14-year-old son Will who loved them. Basically – just for fun – I’d created a series of sketches that showed Lloyd in terrible situations, all creating scenarios for why he might be late getting to work. They were done entirely for fun – and the amusement of my coworkers – with no intentions for ever making them public.
So, just like one might make their own mixtape or mix CD with a collection of hand-picked favorites and then making their own cover art to accompany it, I decided to compile the sticky notes into book form… just for my own amusement. And I figured, if anyone might be interested in checking it out, too, it’d also be available publicly.
I sifted through the sticky note sketches I had and weeded out about 20 that didn’t seem worth releasing for one reason or another (either they weren’t funny, were too similar to other ones, or I didn’t even get the inside joke… given I made most of them almost 20 years ago). I then created a whole new batch to replace the ones I tossed out, bringing the number up to a cool 200.
I then just had fun assembling them onto pages with a lined paper background, throwing in some anecdotes and little background images to accompany the pages. I liked the end result, and now it’s available for all to check out if they wish. 🙂
