2017 Topps Star Wars MasterWork Sketch Cards

Over the summer 2017, I drew 46 sketch cards for Topps Trading Cards for their 2017 Star Wars MasterWork series. The cards are a high-end collector’s series that includes random sketch cards from a slew of great artists as bonus cards inside trading card packs. The sketches are the actual drawings randomly spread out across the run of cards. I received 5 back to keep as part of the payment process, but 41 remain in circulation for people to find. The set released November 8th, and a few of mine have started showing up on Ebay being resold by people finding them.

Here’s a batch of some of the cards I drew for this set!

Colored Pencil Drawing of Blake Lively

Gotta love Blake Lively! I loved her in Age of Adaline and have been a fan since. I thought this photo of her was lovely and I tried my best to do it justice in colored pencil form. I drew it freehand on white Strathmore smooth bristol paper.

Graphite and colored pencil/marker drawing of Damon Wayans and Clayne Crawford from TV’s Lethal Weapon

If you like buddy comedies and buddy cop shows, you haven’t lived till you’ve seen “Lethal Weapon.” Sure, it’s based off of a beloved movie franchise, but it translates wonderfully to the small screen. I drew this duo of Damon Wayans and Clayne Crawford in graphite pencil (freehand) and filled the background in in marker and colored pencil to give it a different feel. (And both guys seemed to like it via social media πŸ™‚ That’s always rewarding!)

Colored Pencil Drawing of Keira Knightley

Between commissions and doing some Topps sketch cards (more on that later), this drawing took some time to finish up. This is a freehand colored pencil portrait of actress Keira Knightley.

Freehand Graphite Drawing of William Powell and Myrna Loy

I just adore these two! I owe my love of old, classic movies to my grandfather and my mom.Β  The Thin Man movies, as well as any of the other 6 or so movies Myrna Loy and William Powell did together, are among some of my favorite. Nick and Nora Charles were relationship goals for sure. πŸ™‚ I haven’t hung this freehand graphite original yet, but I hope to…

Anakin versus Darth Vader commission piece

As a commissioned piece through Etsy, I did this marker and colored pencil drawing that shows Darth Vader/Anakin battling his Jedi self, with the Emperor pulling the strings in the background. It was challenging, but also kind of fun. πŸ™‚

Updated Harpo Marx Freehand Drawing

I’ve only done it a few times, but sometimes it feels good to revisit an older drawing and put some time into reworking it with fresh eyes and a different perspective. I’d drawn this some time ago (maybe 10 years ago?) and it had hung in my living room until I recently took it down to put up my new Marx Brothers trio drawing.

When I took it down, I decided to just try putting some more detail into it. I really liked the end result. You can see the original version below…

Here’s the original. Same drawing, less detail, less time on it. And I had fixed some proportions in the updated version:

The Marx Brothers Freehand Graphite Drawing

I alsoΒ  wanted to replace a Harpo Marx drawing I had hanging in my living room with a drawing of all three brothers, so I took a stab at this image. When it came time to take down the Harpo drawing… well, I decided on a different route…

Graphite Drawing of Cary Grant

I’ve had a freehand drawing I did in 2005 hanging in my living room since I drew it… so I felt as though 12 years was a good enough time to spend looking at the same drawing. I’ve tried drawing Cary Grant several times since then, with unsatisfying results, but I decided to give it another go… and now this drawing hangs in place of the old one.

Here’s a look at the 2005 drawing. I definitely like the new one above better:

Colored Pencil Ray Stantz, Winston Zeddemore Ghostbusters Freehand Colored Pencil Drawing

This piece was one I drew freehand for a free indie mp3 compilation for my website, Jesusfreakhideout.com. The drawing was done on black Strathmore Artagain paper in colored pencil. I used several different references to make it all work, including a wide shot from Ghostbusters, then two different close-up moments related to the “How about a little music?” / “Heh–Yeah…” moment between the two. I love that scene!
