The latest pretty face I decided to draw was Natalie Portman. It’s entirely graphite (using 8B to get the black areas) and done freehand on 9×12 bristol paper. I want to keep pushing the photorealism, so this was a nice exercise in practicing… Purchase link for prints: https://johndibiaseart.com/drawing-print-of-natalie-portman-portrait-star-wars-thor

Kylo Ren from “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” Freehand Colored Pencil Drawing
I don’t typically draw characters before a movie comes out and I have some kind of appreciation or connection to them, but as I get more and more pumped for the new Star Wars film, once this image debuted, I felt the urge to work on a colored pencil drawing […]
Chris Pratt as Owen Grady in “Jurassic World” with Blue the Velociraptor Freehand Colored Pencil and Graphite Drawing
It’s fun when things turn out different than what you plan for. Once again, the freehand approach bit me in the butt a bit as I set out to draw Pratt as Owen Grady from Jurassic World while sitting on his motorcycle, also leaving me with a ton of white […]
Anne Hathaway Freehand Graphite Pencil Portrait Drawing
After almost any project, I tend to just feel the need to do a palette cleanser of a straight-forward pencil drawing. And since I try to draw every night to practice my craft, I want to push detail… and draw pretty things in the process. 🙂 After attempting a colored […]
Stay Puft Marshmallow Man from Ghostbusters on Black Artagain Paper Freehand Colored Pencil Drawing
Just for fun one night, I decided to attempt a colored pencil drawing of one of my all-time favorite cinematic villains… the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. And while Hollywood is currently desecrating the original film for the sake of milking the franchise for more money, I still had fun drawing […]
Marty McFly on Black Artagain Paper Freehand Colored Pencil Drawing
If you know me, you’ll know that while drawing was my first love, music is probably my second love. I started a Christian music website in 1996 as a sophomore in high school on a little free web page on Angelfire.com. In 1998, the site moved to Jesusfreakhideout.com where it […]
Paul Rudd as Ant-Man Freehand Colored Pencil and Graphite Drawing
After seeing so many inspiring works online, it’s tough to just resort to straight portraits. And after seeing Ant-Man and liking it, it’s tough to resort to a portrait of just Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang or just him suited up as Ant-Man. This one is graphite with colored pencil for […]
The T-Rex and Entry Gates of “Jurassic Park” Freehand Graphite (and Colored Pencil) Drawing
I first started getting more serious about drawing around 1993 or 94 — sometime after “Jurassic Park” came out. I loved the film and collected all of the trading cards and even had the “official movie magazine” about the film. In both the cards set and the magazine, the concept […]
New Originals Up for Sale!
I added a new batch of original drawings up for sale. Once they’re gone, they’re gone! Prints are still available for them, but these originals are first-come, first-serve. Thanks for looking! Newly added: Chris Hemsworth as Thor in Thor: The Dark World Tom Hiddleston as Loki in Thor: The Dark […]
Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean Freehand Graphite Pencil Drawing
Before I started drawing almost daily again, I worked on a Jack Sparrow portrait using the image on a birthday party plate as reference (tis true!). Since then, I’ve pushed myself with detail and taking my time with drawings and such. I decided it was high time to try my […]
Eva Green as Vesper Lynd in “Casino Royale” Freehand Graphite Pencil Drawing
Every once in a while, when I’m not sure what to draw but I know I want to do something of interest, I’ll just randomly gravitate towards an image of a favorite character. I loved the James Bond reboot “Casino Royale.” It’s easily in my top 10 movies (if not […]
Shawn Spencer and Burton Guster in TV’s “PSYCH” Freehand Graphite Pencil Portrait Drawing
Gosh, I loved this show. I watched it on NetFlix per a friend’s suggestion and after about a season into its 8-season run, I was hooked. I love the humor, style and the lightness of it. If you know the show, you know Shawn and Gus do a “fist bump” […]
LEGO Captain America Freehand Colored Pencil Drawing
Following LEGO Batman in colored pencil, I wanted to tackle LEGO Captain America (probably my favorite superhero). I actually almost abandoned this one early on because I wasn’t happy with certain aspects of it, but I’m mostly satisfied with the end result. Purchase link for prints: https://johndibiaseart.com/lego-captain-america-drawing-print Purchase link for […]
JohnDiBiaseArt.com is Live!
It actually dawned on me YESTERDAY that my Etsy shop’s URL is long and cumbersome. I’ve settled on www.JohnDiBiaseArt.com to direct people to my Etsy shop. So now you can get to it easily… just follow www.JohnDiBiaseArt.com anytime. Thanks! 🙂
Scarlett Johansson Freehand Graphite Pencil Drawing
I gotta admit; if I’m going to be staring hours at a photograph to try to reproduce it in pencil, it’s a real nice treat for it to be a pretty face. Between the recent Evangeline, Jennifer, Stana and now Scarlett, it’s been fun to find unique photos to use […]
Steve Carell as Michael Scott in TV’s “The Office” Freehand Graphite Pencil Drawing
The Office is easily one of my all-time favorite TV shows. I often rewatch it while drawing to give me some background noise/entertainment, and while going through Season 2 recently, this image from a talking head at the end of one of the episodes inspired me to grab some screen […]
LEGO Batman from The LEGO Movie Freehand Colored Pencil Drawing
LEGO + Batman… enough said! I’m hoping for this to be the start of a new series of colored pencil LEGO superhero portraits. Captain America is up next… Purchase link for prints: https://johndibiaseart.com/lego-batman-drawing-print
Stana Katic Freehand Graphite Pencil Drawing
On the flip side, following Connelly’s portrait, I chased after the likeness of CASTLE‘s Stana Katic (who plays Kate Beckett on that show) and am far more pleased with the result. This is an entirely freehand graphite pencil drawing. Purchase link for prints: https://johndibiaseart.com/drawing-print-of-stana-katic-who-plays-kate-beckett-on-tvs-castle
Jennifer Connelly Freehand Graphite Pencil Portrait Drawing
I’ve found that sometimes you win some and you lose some. I struggled with this pencil portrait of Jennifer Connelly for too long and, sadly, I don’t think I got it quite right. Sometimes it’s the source image that’s part of the problem, and other times I think I just […]
James Roday as Shawn Spencer from TV’s “Psych” Freehand Graphite Pencil Portrait Drawing
Seriously, you gotta love NetFlix. Thanks to a friend’s recommendation, I checked out the show PSYCH — which I’d never seen before — and I absolutely love it. So I set out to draw James Roday as Shawn Spencer. It’s all graphite on white bristol paper. Purchase link for prints: […]
“The Rocketeer” Colored Pencil Sketch
I love love loved The Rocketeer when it came out in 1991. It’s definitely a modern classic to me and when looking for a new project to work on in one night, I decided on this colored pencil on black paper drawing of The Rocketeer from the movie poster artwork. […]
LEGO Movie “Good Cop” Colored Pencil Sketch on Toned Tan Paper
Continuing the sketches on toned paper (Tan in this case), here’s “Good Cop” from The LEGO Movie. Evangeline Lilly Freehand Graphite Pencil Drawing
OK, so I have a soft spot for Evangeline Lilly. After drawing dudes a lot, it’s just nice to stare at a pretty face while drawing. This one was a challenge (as usual?), but I enjoyed it. Instead of turning to colored pencil or an Ebony pencil for the darkest […]
Colored Pencil Sketch of Daniel Craig as James Bond in “Skyfall” On Black Paper
I started a sketch before this one — and a new detailed pencil portrait — but put those on hold once I picked up my first-ever pad of black paper. I keep a folder of images on my iPad of ones that I may some day like to draw. […]
Rocket from “Guardians of the Galaxy” Freehand Colored Pencil Sketch on Toned Tan Paper
Continuing a run of sketches on toned paper in quicker bursts of time, I opted for this Colored Pencil Sketch of Rocket from Guardians of the Galaxy. Love the film. Love the character, and I thought I’d give this one a shot. It was a lot of fun. The original […]
Colored Pencil Sketch of Darth Vader in Star Wars
The same night I finished Ron Perlman as Vincent, I decided to try to punch out a quick sketch. Less than 2 hours later (with some of that time being spent drawing this while watching TV), I had this Darth Vader colored pencil drawing. It’s on 9×12 Toned Gray paper. […]
Ron Perlman as Vincent from TV’s “Beauty and the Beast” Commissioned Freehand Graphite Pencil Drawing
I don’t take a lot of commission work mostly due to the time it takes to do a portrait — and so I also don’t necessarily want to draw certain pictures people want me to do. But this one was pretty interesting. I remember my mom being into “Beauty and […]
Henry Cavill as Superman in “Man of Steel” Freehand Colored Pencil Sketch
I took a stab next at a drawing of Henry Cavill as Superman one night… but after failing to nail a different pose properly. I scrapped it and went with this one instead. Mostly happy with the result… Purchase link for prints: https://johndibiaseart.com/henry-cavill-as-superman-in-man-of-steel-colored-pencil-sketch-drawing-print
Colored Pencil Sketch of Emmet Brickowski from “The LEGO Movie”
This was pretty fun too — trying to capture Emmet from a screenshot from “The LEGO Movie.” This one was just a couple hours one night while watching TV. Prints are available upon request!
Colored Pencil Sketch of Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter in “Captain America: The First Avenger”
My third attempt at doing a full, quick sketch in one night went to Peggy Carter from Captain America: The First Avenger — a character that’s been making waves on TV in the show “Agent Carter.” This one was pretty fun, but tricky to get the likeness down quickly.
