Anakin versus Darth Vader commission piece

As a commissioned piece through Etsy, I did this marker and colored pencil drawing that shows Darth Vader/Anakin battling his Jedi self, with the Emperor pulling the strings in the background. It was challenging, but also kind of fun. 🙂

Drawing of Felicity Jones as Jyn Erso in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

This one was really fun. I decided to draw Felicity Jones as Jyn Erso to get ahead of the upcoming film (which I’m super stoked for!), and as I worked on her portrait in colored pencil, I decided to abandon the original background for Darth Vader. And then it just felt right to add in the Death Star… Both Vader and the Death Star are graphite while Jyn is in colored pencil. (All freehand)

Colored Pencil Sketch of Darth Vader in Star Wars

darth vader instagramThe same night I finished Ron Perlman as Vincent, I decided to try to punch out a quick sketch. Less than 2 hours later (with some of that time being spent drawing this while watching TV), I had this Darth Vader colored pencil drawing. It’s on 9×12 Toned Gray paper. Definitely a fun one.

Darth Vader Colored Pencil / Graphite Portrait

VaderSometimes it can be pretty hard to decide on an image of a person or character to draw. It’s one thing to see an image and think “I want to try drawing that!” and another to know who or what you want to turn into a drawing, but unsure of what image to use as a source.

I had gotten some Darth Vader requests over time and while trying to find something unique to reproduce, I settled on the iconic moment when Vader reached out his hand to Luke and asked him to join him … in my second favorite film of all time. It was an odd choice to do this one vertically, as you lose some of Vader’s hand and the side of his body, but I wanted to capture more of him vertically than a horizontal take would have. Plus, it gives focus to his reaching-out.

This is a colored pencil and graphite mix, with Vader in various grades of graphite and some color accents, and then a color background.

Pencil Drawing of Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars

Luke-BespinAfter working on the screenshot from Back To The Future and enjoying it so much, I decided to try my hand at another favorite movie scene. This time I took a screenshot from The Empire Strikes Back, the fifth (or second, depending how you look at it) Star Wars film. I just always loved the confrontation between Vader and Luke and the emotion of Luke throughout this scene and really the whole movie as he tries to do the right thing and fight evil yet defend the ones he loves. I decided to do the wound/bruise on his eye in Prismacolor pencils
