Darth Vader Colored Pencil and Graphite Portrait

On December 29, 2014March 11, 2021
John DiBiase

VaderSometimes it can be pretty hard to decide on an image of a person or character to draw. It’s one thing to see an image and think “I want to try drawing that!” and another to know who or what you want to turn into a drawing, but unsure of what image to use as a source.

I had gotten some Darth Vader requests over time and while trying to find something unique to reproduce, I settled on the iconic moment when Vader reached out his hand to Luke and asked him to join him … in my second favorite film of all time. It was an odd choice to do this one vertically, as you lose some of Vader’s hand and the side of his body, but I wanted to capture more of him vertically than a horizontal take would have. Plus, it gives focus to his reaching-out.

This is a colored pencil and graphite mix, with Vader in various grades of graphite and some color accents, and then a color background.
