Colored Pencil Drawing of Han and Leia (Harrison Ford & Carrie Fisher) from Star Wars

han-and-leia-copySigh. It’s hard to believe Carrie Fisher is really gone…

I use my iPad as a way to display the source photo I’m drawing so I can look at the image and then try to replicate it on the paper nearby (by eyeballing it). Anyway, I keep a folder of images I like that I’d like to possibly draw someday and this was one that was in it for quite a while. Well… with Carrie’s passing, I thought it was time to try it.  (Freehand colored pencil)

It now hangs in our dining room.

Darth Vader Colored Pencil / Graphite Portrait

VaderSometimes it can be pretty hard to decide on an image of a person or character to draw. It’s one thing to see an image and think “I want to try drawing that!” and another to know who or what you want to turn into a drawing, but unsure of what image to use as a source.

I had gotten some Darth Vader requests over time and while trying to find something unique to reproduce, I settled on the iconic moment when Vader reached out his hand to Luke and asked him to join him … in my second favorite film of all time. It was an odd choice to do this one vertically, as you lose some of Vader’s hand and the side of his body, but I wanted to capture more of him vertically than a horizontal take would have. Plus, it gives focus to his reaching-out.

This is a colored pencil and graphite mix, with Vader in various grades of graphite and some color accents, and then a color background.

More Original Pieces Up for Sale

It’s time for me to part with some more of my original works. I store them in my portfolios and I realize they’re just being “wasted” hidden in between pages of other hidden works — when people can be enjoying them on their walls or wherever. The pricing depends on how much I really rather keep it, the amount of time that goes into them, the popularity of the actor/character, and what it might cost if it were a commission piece.

Here’s a gallery of all the originals I just added to my etsy store. Once these originals are sold, that’s it! So get them while you can!

Pencil Drawing of Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars

Luke-BespinAfter working on the screenshot from Back To The Future and enjoying it so much, I decided to try my hand at another favorite movie scene. This time I took a screenshot from The Empire Strikes Back, the fifth (or second, depending how you look at it) Star Wars film. I just always loved the confrontation between Vader and Luke and the emotion of Luke throughout this scene and really the whole movie as he tries to do the right thing and fight evil yet defend the ones he loves. I decided to do the wound/bruise on his eye in Prismacolor pencils

Pencil Drawing of Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia in Star Wars

LeiaI’ve been on a Star Wars kick lately and I realized, while I’ve drawn Luke and Han a couple times, I’ve never drawn Leia. So this was an attempt to draw Leia but not using one of the typical iconic pictures of her. Empire Strikes Back is still my favorite Star Wars movie, so this picture just seemed the right choice. It’s done completely in graphite pencil on Bristol paper. (January 2014)

Luke Skywalker Pencil Portrait

After I finished the Mac drawing, I wasn’t sure what to work on next. I came to decide that I’ve never drawn Luke Skywalker and that needed to be remedied. This is a drawing of a promo shot of Luke / Mark Hamill for Empire Strikes Back. All of it was done in pencil in August, 2012.
