Pencil Drawing of Evangeline Lilly

evie-hands-copySometimes I see a photo and just really feel inspired to try to draw it. I loved Evangeline Lilly in the show LOST and was honored when she shared one of my previous drawings on her social media channels. But, truth be told, I haven’t been completely satisfied with any of my drawings of her yet. So when I was between drawings, I decided to take a stab at this one (and honestly, I started it once, it wasn’t turning out, so I scrapped it. I then tried again a few nights or a week later). I do kind of like this one, but I still doubt it’ll be the last time I draw Evie 😉

On this night, I just wanted to draw something new and in just graphite pencil.

I started another Evie drawing, posted the progress to instagram and later the next night, this happened:

Needless to say, I was beside myself excited and honored. 🙂 I finished it a few days later, which is the finished product you see at the top.

Colored Pencil Portrait of Evangeline Lilly (LOST / Ant-Man)

Evie-full-color-copyAfter doing a more “basic” colored pencil portrait of Han, I wanted to venture into more colored pencil portraits. So, as practice, I decided to draw Evangeline Lilly again, but this time all in color. The skin tones were definitely a challenge, but I found it to be pretty good practice.

Pencil Drawing of Evangeline Lilly

Evie-Hair-copyOK, so I have a soft spot for Evangeline Lilly. After drawing dudes a lot, it’s just nice to stare at a pretty face while drawing. This one was a challenge (as usual?), but I enjoyed it. Instead of turning to colored pencil or an Ebony pencil for the darkest areas, I’ve been using an 8B, and really liking the results. But it’s always a challenge not to just be too heavyhanded with stuff, so I have to make sure I just don’t turn into a little kid with a crayon and layer on the black areas. I’m mostly happy with the end result. But, still, there are times when I feel like I could keep working on it forever (something I’m dealing with with the current project)…

More Original Pieces Up for Sale

It’s time for me to part with some more of my original works. I store them in my portfolios and I realize they’re just being “wasted” hidden in between pages of other hidden works — when people can be enjoying them on their walls or wherever. The pricing depends on how much I really rather keep it, the amount of time that goes into them, the popularity of the actor/character, and what it might cost if it were a commission piece.

Here’s a gallery of all the originals I just added to my etsy store. Once these originals are sold, that’s it! So get them while you can!

Evangeline-Lilly

Close to finishing Optimus, I wanted to start a new drawing just for pure kicks. I tend to troll the web for inspiring photos to attempt to draw and I had this one on my iPad for months (probably when I was looking for a photo of Evangeline for the first drawing I did of her as Kate in LOST). This source photo was actually a 2010 TV Guide cover I believe. Truth be told, I’d purchased the wrong Bristol paper pad — vellum instead of smooth — and didn’t notice it till I got home from the art store. So I decided to just try this paper again with a just-for-fun drawing. (And, let’s face it, she’s got quite a lovely face for casual drawing!) I want to keep practicing and practicing and I wanted to see if I could really push my detailing.

I found that I like the look of the vellum texture. Looking at the photo above as I type this, I can see the difference — and I wouldn’t want vellum instead of smooth for ALL my drawings — but I definitely see the merit in the vellum tooth of the paper.

After starting this one, I actually started a second drawing project and worked on both this one and that one (more on that soon) on the same nights, just doing a little here and there on each. It was fun because I could take a break from one and just go to the other and back again. I’ll definitely be doing that again.

Drawing of Evangeline Lilly as Tauriel in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

TaurielEver since “discovering” and becoming a hopeless LOST fan in 2012, I’ve enjoyed Evangeline Lilly’s work. I was pretty stoked to learn she was joining the world of The Hobbit and, recently after revisiting The Lord of the Rings film, I just felt inspired to draw Tauriel from the second Hobbit film. I enjoyed drawing Evangeline as Kate Austen a year or so ago and have enjoyed her as a subject. This was the drawing I started while taking a break from the recent Egon Spengler project.

Evangeline Lilly as Kate Austen in LOST

In April, 2012, I “discovered” the TV series LOST when Amazon.com offered an app for their Prime users for the PS3 system. I started watching the show, got hooked, and watched all 6 seasons in about a month’s time. A month or two later I had my wife sit down and watch it and she became totally hooked. At the start of the year, we started it up again and it’s inspired a new series of drawings from me.

The first is Evangeline Lilly as Kate Austen. When I posted updates of the drawing on Instagram, I cracked that I was tired of drawing all these dudes and I needed a pretty face to stare at for hours for a change. It’s mostly true, too. Ha!

By this drawing, I’d been using all kinds of drafting pencils too – lead holders as well as 0.3 mechanical pencils. Let me tell you that those are a DREAM. I love ’em. And it helped HEAPS in drawing the hair. (Incidentally, as I tore through Burn Notice at the end of last year, I’ve been working on these while watching the Bond series in order whenever my wife’s not around for us to watch LOST together 😉 ).
