Colored Pencil Ray Stantz, Winston Zeddemore Ghostbusters Freehand Colored Pencil Drawing

This piece was one I drew freehand for a free indie mp3 compilation for my website, Jesusfreakhideout.com. The drawing was done on black Strathmore Artagain paper in colored pencil. I used several different references to make it all work, including a wide shot from Ghostbusters, then two different close-up moments related to the “How about a little music?” / “Heh–Yeah…” moment between the two. I love that scene!

Ghostbusters II Freehand Graphite Sketch

I hate not finishing something I start. I started this drawing in early 2016 and just really struggled with making it come together. I eventually set it aside until the summer of 2017 when I decided to work on it some more. I’m glad I did, and now the final version hangs in my work office (under an authentic Ghostbusters II poster). 🙂

Pencil / Colored Pencil Ghostbusters Commission

And then someone wants to pay you to draw your four favorite characters from your favorite movie. Only drawback is you have to give it up when it’s done. 🙂 This is a pencil drawing with red colored pencil accents of all four of the only Ghostbusters for me. 🙂

Colored Pencil Drawing of Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd in Ghostbusters II

I did a drawing of these two a few years ago from the first movie, just sitting on steps chatting between takes. I saw this image and loved how it was kind of a sequel to it, which was from the sequel. And I thought it’d be fun to do as my first all-color Ghostbusters portrait. And, as Sony debuted the abhorrent new trailer from the franchise’s completely unnecessary reboot for this summer, this drawing served as my passive reinforcement that there were only two Ghostbusters films ever made.

Dan Aykroyd as Ray Stantz in Ghostbusters and his Real Ghostbusters character Pencil / Colored Pencil Drawing

Ray-and-RayThe second in the series and first to get finished (and maybe my favorite of the 4) is Ray and Ray. I took a screenshot from Ghostbusters to get this portrait of Dan and used it as a source for the pencil drawing. Ray is fully in colored pencil.

Pencil Drawing of Dan Aykroyd as Ray Stantz in Ghostbusters

Ray-GozerAs you’ve noticed by now, I’m a huge fan of Ghostbusters. Always have been. I did a drawing of Ray Stantz right out of college and I’m not a huge fan of it, but it sells a lot in my Etsy store (surprisingly to me). So I decided to work on another one – one I’d be more proud of, and so I took a screen shot from the film on my iPad and used it as a source photo to freehand draw from it. I’m actually pretty happy with it this time!

Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd from Ghostbusters Pencil Portrait

I loved the camaraderie and “broseph”-ness of this photo. I believe it was taken while the guys where having a smoke break during the filming of Ghostbusters. This was a big challenge for me because, for the life of me, I could NOT reproduce the face of Bill Murray in the original photo for this drawing. What I ended up doing was use other photographs for reference and then eventually pausing the movie near the beginning (when he’s flirting with the girl in the opening scene “I was just about to say, ‘8 o’clock?’ You’re a legitimate phenomenon!”) to use as a reference. I’m not 100% happy with or satisfied with the end product, but I do like it and found it to be quite a stretch for me. In all honesty, I would have given up long before this drawing really started coming together. I drew it entirely freehand, which always creates a bunch of obstacles… including proportions!

I used regular Staedtler drawing pencils and red Prismacolor Premiere pencils for the patches.
