Confession time… I actually like The Lost World: Jurassic Park. No, I know it’s not as good as the original. And I know it’s not a great movie, but I do really enjoy it. And it came out while I was in high school and I have fond memories of seeing it several times in the theater (with friends and family, too). It’s just a fun dinosaur movie with Goldblum leading the way!
So this portrait image of him from the film was one I had wanted to draw for a while. Side anecdote: when I was pretty new to drawing, I worked on my own comic books just for fun. And I used the reference photo for this drawing as something to work from to try to draw Jeff as Ian as a cartoon character. haha
But with a resurgence of love for Jurassic Park with its 25th anniversary this year, I felt the need to do a Goldblum portrait (and, honestly, I had hoped he’d like it and share it on social media… but alas, he hasn’t)
As I aimed for a standard portrait, I decided to add in the t-rex… then I decided to add in Alan and the flare… and then I decided to throw in a velociraptor. At the risk of over-stuffing the image with too much (and risking people thinking I don’t know my Jurassic Park at all by mixing two movies’ imagery together), I proceeded to merge everything into one freehand colored pencil portrait.
About a month after I’d finished it, I learned that we might have the opportunity to actually MEET Jeff in person! And so, in August, my wife and I trekked to Boston where Jeff graciously signed the drawing and expressed kind words and excitement over it… and we also were able to get a photo with him. 🙂
