Harold Ramis as Egon Spengler in Ghostbusters and Animated Egon Freehand Graphite and Colored Pencil Drawing

Egon-and-EgonI don’t feel like I’m very creative. I’ll just say it. I enjoy taking photos and making drawings out of them, but if you ask me to draw something from memory or paint some kind of unique imagery, I’ll struggle and the end result will look like a really bad round of Pictionary. So I wanted to do something a little different and out of my comfort zone — to pair realistic pencil portraits with their colored, cartoon counterparts. Being a big Ghostbusters fan, I decided to pair the movie actors with their animated ones. I started with Egon & Egon and went nuts trying to get Egon’s face just right. I reworked it multiple times. I even used reference photos from different scenes to try to get it right. I think I’m happy with the end result, but overall, this one was such a struggle for me that it just lost its enjoyment for me. Still, I was happy to finish it. I actually started the second piece, Ray, before finishing this one. I think I may have even finished Ray first. But this was the first piece from this series I had started.
