Colored Pencil Drawing of Chris Pratt as Star-Lord with the Milano (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2)

Continuing with an unofficial series of heroes with their rides, I followed Jyn with this colored pencil drawing of Chris Pratt as Star-Lord / Peter Quill from “Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2” and his spaceship, The Milano. This one was drawn entirely in colored pencil. Fun fact – I worked on this while on vacation in Disney World the week before the film’s release. And when it did release, I wanted to see it so badly, I went to the movie theater all by myself for the first time ever. It was weird, not gonna lie. But I’m glad I made the effort. As an introvert, going to the movies alone is no easy task. 🙂

Colored Pencil Drawing of Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange

Marvel’s just knocking each movie out of the park, and Benedict Cumberbatch was an inspired choice to play Doctor Strange. This is a freehand colored pencil drawing, and it was quite a challenge. I used a little bit of white paint marker to assist in the details of his magical stuff there, but the rest is freehand colored pencil.

Colored Pencil Captain America Drawing (from “Civil War”)

Cap-2016-in-color-Civil-War-copyTo accompany the new Bucky drawing–and to draw a new suited up Captain America in full color–I decided to attempt a new freehand drawing. I drew it out in pencil first and then erased that and drew it in colored pencil (which is typically my process for colored pencil drawings)

Freehand Drawing of Paul Rudd as Ant-Man

After seeing so many inspiring works online, it’s tough to just resort to straight portraits. And after seeing Ant-Man and liking it, it’s tough to resort to a portrait of just Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang or just him suited up as Ant-Man. This one is graphite with colored pencil for the red areas of the suit.

Colored Pencil Drawing of LEGO Captain America

LEGO-Captain-America-copyFollowing LEGO Batman in colored pencil, I wanted to tackle LEGO Captain America (probably my favorite superhero). I actually almost abandoned this one early on because I wasn’t happy with certain aspects of it, but I’m mostly satisfied with the end result.

Pencil Drawing of Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett-Johansson-copyI gotta admit; if I’m going to be staring hours at a photograph to try to reproduce it in pencil, it’s a real nice treat for it to be a pretty face. Between the recent Evangeline, Jennifer, Stana and now Scarlett, it’s been fun to find unique photos to use as references for glamor drawings. And with Scarlett in a new “Avengers” film right now, it couldn’t be more timely! 😉  This one is also all graphite.

Pencil Portrait of Jennifer Connelly

Jennifer-Connelly-copyI’ve found that sometimes you win some and you lose some. I struggled with this pencil portrait of Jennifer Connelly for too long and, sadly, I don’t think I got it quite right. Sometimes it’s the source image that’s part of the problem, and other times I think I just struggle nailing the likeness just right. While there are elements of this one that I do like (like some of the shading), overall, I have to admit… I’m disappointed it didn’t turn out better. Sorry, Jennifer… Next time?

Pencil Drawing of Evangeline Lilly

Evie-Hair-copyOK, so I have a soft spot for Evangeline Lilly. After drawing dudes a lot, it’s just nice to stare at a pretty face while drawing. This one was a challenge (as usual?), but I enjoyed it. Instead of turning to colored pencil or an Ebony pencil for the darkest areas, I’ve been using an 8B, and really liking the results. But it’s always a challenge not to just be too heavyhanded with stuff, so I have to make sure I just don’t turn into a little kid with a crayon and layer on the black areas. I’m mostly happy with the end result. But, still, there are times when I feel like I could keep working on it forever (something I’m dealing with with the current project)…

Colored Pencil Sketch of Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter in “Captain America: The First Avenger”

agent carter instagramMy third attempt at doing a full, quick sketch in one night went to Peggy Carter from Captain America: The First Avenger — a character that’s been making waves on TV in the show “Agent Carter.” This one was pretty fun, but tricky to get the likeness down quickly.
